Want advice about the Power Matrix item? Some enemies carry pill thingies with them you can hack the enemy and choose “RELEASE” to force the enemy to drop it, and then you can pick it up and charge a matrix! It’s kind of like a healing potion.Ĭonfused about the little red or blue glowing pill thingies that you find on the ground? They’re mostly used to charge the Power Matrix item-find a matrix first. After you find DAMU, the compass will also start to track storm portals with a red glow.Ĭonfused about the Power Matrix item? You “charge” the matrix by picking up those little red or blue glowing pill thingies on the ground, which will only be possible to pick up after you find the Power Matrix. Items such as apocalypse flasks and health spheres are NOT considered Arms and are NOT tracked by the compass’ blue glow. The glow grows more intense, and narrower, as you get closer to the target. The compass tracks Arms, which show up as a blue glow. You might be wondering how the heck the compass works. Once you get MUSHHUS, don’t forget to use hacking! Later on, you can come back when you’re powered up and do a more exhaustive search. If you’re having trouble, you may find it less frustrating to try avoidance tactics (read: running or sneaking past the bad guys, or just running away, or just leaving them alone if they’re relatively passive). But in this game you may find yourself in many situations where the enemies are flying death robots and you’re armed with a boomerang and a glorified stick.

On that note: in many metroidvanias, the usual procedure is to obliterate every enemy in an area while doing a full investigation of everything in sight. I found Axiom Verge 2 to be a little more linear than most metroidvanias, but the usual advice still applies: poke around in every nook and cranny when you can, and of course come back to revisit old areas after you’ve gotten a few new Arms. Don’t worry, this game has plenty of other ways to confuse and confound you than that. There are no “secret” exits in this game! That’s right, if it’s possible to leave a section by walking (or falling) into the edge of the screen, you’ll see the exit on the map, period.

Exits from a section look like slightly darker “breaks” in the colored section border. Like many metroidvanias, the map is divided up into regions, and those regions are divided up into little sections (screens) with entrances and exits between them. Obviously it’s up to you how you use it, but do use it, it’s there to help, and you can set as many reminder marks as you want.

Make sure to use the “Set Reminder” function on your map screen to mark places of interest that you can’t yet do anything with. Apocalypse flasks and health pickups do not count as Arms. This game refers to most upgrades as “Arms” from now on I’ll be using the same terminology in this guide. When there's a plainer title, I use spoiler tags to hide it.

This deliberately obscures what the upgrade actually does, so you won't spoil yourself at a glance. Throughout the guide, I usually use the in-game names for upgrades. In these cases I cover the offending nonessential material with spoiler tags. There are a few rare places where I couldn’t help myself and mention upgrades that aren’t strictly necessary to progress in the game. Nor does it tell you where all the optional stuff is, you’ll mostly need to sniff that out yourself. It’s not a step-by-step guide telling you exactly what you’ll encounter in terms of enemies, traps, and obstacles (though I give some vague advice on that sort of thing in the “General Info and Advice” section). It also gives advice for using each game-critical upgrade, as well as advice for a few other things, though the advice is usually covered up by spoiler tags. This is (hopefully!) a good guide to consult if you’re totally stuck and don’t have any idea at all where to go next or what to do.
